One of my long term personal projects is a DIY Lightsaber. The task at hand, to create a prop Lightsaber that uses LEDs and eventually a sound board and accelerometer.

The main lessons for this project are iterative design and design for manufacturing or DFM. I designed and 3D printed the handle of the Lightsaber, and made sure to include space and mounts for the electronics that would sit inside the handle. In order to be able to fit these in as well as 3D print this on a hobby printer, I have to break up the handle into multiple parts both so it would fit on my printer and so I could put electronics inside.

My future plans for this project include designing a new handle with a different style inspired by Ezra Bridger's Lightsaber from Star Wars Rebels. As well as implementing of the shelf parts in order to create a more robust electronic system that includes the capabilities for sound effects.
